What the Hell Did I Just Read
by David Wong
This series is just dicks, dildos, and Deus ex machinas... and it's a delight.
I first encountered "John Dies at the End" many years ago, and couldn't get through the first chapter. I tried again a few years later, and I think I got to chapter four before wandering off. Then, when I was drowning in the hellscape that is paramedic school, I picked it up one more time over spring break to give it a last chance before resigning it to the giveaway pile. I devoured it and "This Book is Full of Spiders" in less than two days.
Last week, my therapist told me I'm not allowed to read any more nonfiction for a little bit. That got me wondering whether this book had finally been published.
Hey, I'm only three years behind.
Anyway, like I said. The whole series is dicks, dildos, and Deus ex machinas. And it works. I don't know why -- maybe it's because it never pretends to be anything else. Maybe it's because it's peppered with surprisingly thoughtful and insightful plot points punctuated by sex jokes and lots of methamphetamine. Whatever makes it work, it WORKS.
