Smart Mouth by Emma Lee Jayne
1.0
There were many things I didn’t like about this book.
First, the main story of the book takes place in just a few days? I found myself asking “what’s actually happening?” They meet day 1. Day 2 they’re going on a date. Day 3 it’s over as she storms out. What?
Second, I am so tired of reading about smart women who can see themselves as being even remotely attractive to others. It’s tired, old, and done. We get it she’s smart and everyone else around her sees her beauty but her.
Finally, the portrayal of a Latino character felt very stereotypical and based in preconceived notions of what a Latino person and family should look like. There were times I had to put the book away because the cringe was so bad. It was wild to read “everyone assumes if you’re Latino, you have a huge, amazing, and supportive family.” I could have written a sentence like that off if it happened once but there were several throughout the book.
Overall, I found myself skipping over a lot in this book because it just didn’t seem necessary. I saw other reviews with how awesome this was and how fast paced it was. Like, did we read the same book??? Sure it’s fast paced because their initial romance happens in 3 days after 12 (?) years when they met. But what ACTUALLY happened? This was just not a romance story that had me swooning and giggly because I loved the characters
