Max and Eva’s story has everything I love in a romance read -  marriage of convenience, grumpy/sunshine (she’s the grump), billionaire / struggling small business owner, one bed, he falls first, and “take your hands off my wife.” (Okay I also love “why choose” but there is a time and a place for that and it is not here! 😂) Add to this the charming small town of Laguna Island (am I becoming a small town romance girlie???), a curvy FMC, and lots of Latine characters? Perfection.

There is an emotional complexity to their story that exceeds the sum of those aforementioned parts.
When it became clear why Eva had abandonment issues, my heart broke a little. And Max just committing to her so wholeheartedly? It was beautiful.
I laughed. I cheered. I cried. I am sad it is over.

Carlos makes the perfect villain and the plot with Max’s inheritance adds just the right amount of tension.

Speaking of tension…it is a slow burn. *chef’s kiss* There is a part in the book where Max describes the Chilean dance, the cueca: “the dance is based on how a rooster seduces a hen. A mating ritual. It’s about getting close, so close to kissing…” I immediately recognized that the book is the narrative equivalent of this dance! And when the spice hits…be ready, because damn! Daniel has a bit of a dom vibe and Eva is lightly submissive. It’s very hot. And the best part? You kind of get that *finally!* moment twice. If you want to know what I mean, you’ll just have to read it. And I think the last piece of it is that it is a slow burn because there is a lot of emphasis on consent. Max is very aware of Eva's comfort levels and respects her boundaries at all times. And he communicates with her as things shift. It's gorgeous. If all slow burns were like this I would convert to being a fan! 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ for the quality of the slow burn and the double payoff, plus the slightly k1nkey vibe.

For diversity, there is lots of Latine representation. Max and many of his friends are Chilean American. Eva is Bolivian and Uruguayan American. Max was partly raised in Chile while Eva feels very distant from her heritage and does not speak Spanish. They show us a nuanced range of Latine American identity.

In addition, the town of Laguna Island is a haven for Latin American folks in the Pacific Northwest. Our friends Alé and Daniel from Under the Meh-stletoe even show up and play a significant role in the plot. Daniel and Alé are not only Latine themselves, but also plus size. And Eva is curvy too. With no internalized fat phobia or self-hate. There are also queer and trans folks among the secondary characters.

I read an advance reader e-copy and I need the paperback for my shelves ASAP. I hope you are ready to hear me talk about this one all the time because I loved it!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
