I've had a lot of feelings about Dead Souls for the past 6 months. I didn't realize that

the book doesn't have an ending

until after I bought it, and was disappointed for a bit after that revelation. That said, Chichikov really grew on me fast, and the almost episodic flow of the book really worked for me. I may pick up some other picaresque novels after this one
