doruga 's review for:
Robinson Crusoe
by Daniel Defoe
(2.5) Man this book flew so high and then very quickly crashed and burned. I knew I was probably not going to enjoy this one that much, but its so commonly referenced that I felt it would be best to read it anyway. Its no doubt that the writing is brilliant. Some moments are particularly brilliant, but most of the moralistic lessons have aged quite poorly and didnt affect me at all. Also, the whole cannibals section was as bad as I knew it would be. I guess I'm glad I read it? Hahahaha not sure.
This quote I thought was nice though:
"I have since often observed, how incongruous and irrational the common temper of mankind is, especially of youth (...) that they are not ashamed to sin, and yet are ashamed to repent; not ashamed of the action for which they ought justly to be esteemed fools, but are ashamed of the returning, which only can make them be esteemed wise men"
