Shattered Promises
by Jessica Sorensen
DID NOT FINISH
Ugh, I had to call it quits after reading about half the book. The plot was going nowhere (I'm not even sure there was a plot, to be honest!), the characters were hard to relate to, and there was no flow or cohesion to the storyline. There were many times I had no idea what was happening! Hints would be dropped, but never elaborated on, and eventually I just did not care to find out what was going on.
This is also one of the few times where I have absolutely DESPISED the main character, and I do not use that word lightly. Gemma gets into some stupid situations frequently, and her responses are far from believable. She's snarky to the point of being annoying, she can't make up her mind about anything, and she seems to have no morals (at least where guys are concerned). While she is interested in one guy, she has no problem getting physical with another. Classy. The main love interest, Alex, was such a douche, and when you put Gemma and him together, it was a hot mess. I'm actually proud of myself that I was able to handle reading about half of this story.
Yet again I have been deceived by all the high praise this book has received. I'm really starting to become skeptical when I see a NA book with high ratings. It's getting hard for me to weed through a bunch of mediocre works to find that one diamond in the rough, and this story was definitely not a gem.
