The Prank by L.V. Matthews
4.0

‘The Prank’ explores pranks as entertainment - how far do we go for a laugh at someone else’s expense? And what happens when a prank goes wrong?

Eleanor works in a high end restaurant in London and is shocked when she comes across a familiar name one evening; Jim Valente - producer of the show ‘Pranksters’. She knows the name but can’t understand why she is having such an adverse reaction to it. That is until she does some research and realises that this man is linked to her father’s death.

Eleanor has never recovered from losing her father when she was a child, and her anger at discovering that Jim Valente’s TV show may have been the catalyst for the events surrounding his death spurs her on to delve deeper into ‘Pranksters’. Her research takes her to some very dark places on the web and as she finds herself knee deep in revenge sites, she comes across ‘Horsehead’, a dubious character with a plan!

I thought this was such an original and intriguing storyline with several different strands that make this such a compelling read.

The characters are all really well developed and complex. Eleanor is trapped by her grief, struggling to move on with her life and Jim Valente is absolutely vile - a powerful and dangerous man with an eye for the ladies (think Harvey Weinstein) he made my skin crawl but such a brilliant character! Horsehead was also very entertaining and the interactions between him and Eleanor were actually really witty.

Although this is a story of revenge, it is also very touching when it comes to Eleanor’s family background and I loved the relationship between Eleanor and her sister Lissy.

It’s hard to believe that this is a debut, it’s a brilliantly written thriller, full of twists and so nerve wracking in places I was on the edge of my seat! Highly recommended
