Winterson is a contemporary British author who hasn't been read by enough people. She is one of my favorite writers. This is one of my favorite books of all time.
She plays with gender, time, and narrative scope so it's a bit of a bumpy ride at first. Sit back and enjoy it as her writing is so lush that even if you don't know where you're going, you'll like where you are.
