Catching Summer by L.P. Dover

3.0

This is the first book I've read by L.P. Dover and despite this being part of a larger series, I had no problems following the storyline and understanding the background of secondary characters who have clearly appeared in previous books.

Not being more familiar with the author's writing I wasn't entirely prepared for the romantic suspense aspect of the book. Although I kind of like the fact that it built up slowly and snuck up on me. L.P. Dover certainly doesn't have problems putting her characters through some tough times, and I like that the romance part and finding love balances out the sadder aspects.

One thing that did bother me was the fact that I'm figuring these characters are in their mid to late twenties. I know for sure that Summer is 28. As for other mentions of age, I didn't see any. What really got on my nerves were some of the actions / antics of the characters. Even Summer complains a few times throughout the book about how it's like they're in high school again (jealousies and rivalries abound) and it's completely true. But just because a character acknowledges this, doesn't negate the fact that some of theses characters who should be acting a bit more grown up.

Not all characters are like this, but I guess it's enough that it stands out and makes me take notice.

Overall, I enjoyed this read. I loved that where Evan and Summer were concerned, they were solid. For the most part there were no misunderstandings or unnecessary miscommunications. I liked that Evan understood where Summer was coming from in regards to her past and didn't get frustrated when she needed a little more time to adjust.
