Yours, Everlasting by Beth Bolden

5.0

This is the second book of the Enchanted Folklore series and gives you a better knowledge of Evrard/Rhys form the first book. Be warned, even though this novel could be read as a standalone, it would benefit you more to read the first, because some of the characters and storytelling align and interlink between the two.

Blurb:
Evander (also known as Rhys and Evrard) was a guardian living in the Castle on top of the world with his 12 other brothers in arms. They’re magical creatures charged with protecting the different areas of the Surface where the humans lived. Evander, Guardian of Secrets, has noticed a rise secrets and intent of growing sorcerers on the Surface and he needs to something about this. He brought it up at the conclave with his brothers, along with their leader Deimos. He was told to let it go but he couldn’t, and therefore he was banished to surface with little powers and betrayed by his friend and lover, Vanya – Guardian of Belief.

Hundreds of years later, he was advisors to the kings of Fontaine (Gray and Rory) and heard a voice that he could only hear, beckoning him to the well (how the guardians travelling to the Surface). Marcos revealed himself to Evander, who was the guardian of war and has been in love with Evander for thousands of years, secretly. Marcos has been keeping an eye on Evander since he was banished. The both travelled to the Well when they become entrapped in a loop spell, thinking they were traveling further to the Well but were not. This trap was placed by ‘The Mother’ as a way to grab their attention. The Mother explained that she was the creator of the surface and of the Guardians, showing that Deimos has strayed from their sacred mission. He has been overloading the people of the surface with magic that they cannot handle in attempts to get a cult like following. The mother tasked them to defeat Deimos but they were not sure if they could because Deimos was their leader and the one that held the most power.

Evander and Marcos continued their journey to well, getting to know each other more and more. Evander was seeing another side to Marcos and was starting to have feelings for him. Once they go to the well, Evander remembered that the mother told him that the well can bring back what has been lost. Evander received his full power back after his banishment. Vanya was the one that called to Evander and it seems that Deimos has swayed a few other Guardians into his relentless goal and it became more obvious to Evander and Marcos that Deimos needed to be stopped.

Will they be able to stop Deimos and the other Guardians? What would happen to the Guardians if Deimos was killed? Will they be able to contain the power that was given to the humans on the surface?

Opinion:
This was very enjoyable to read, it was definitely a step up from ‘Yours, Forever After.’ I found that what was lacking in the first book, was covered in this one. More magic, more battles and more mysteries.

It started off with curiosity and enchantment. We were transformed to the Castle on top of the world and gave us the chance to know who Evander/Evrard/Rhys is and where he comes from. I was sucked in from the get go.

If you read my review on ‘Yours, Forever After,’ you would know that Evrard was an arrogant, all-knowing Unicorn. But reading this book with Evander, I don’t think you could tell they were one of the same. The character’s attitude change between book one and two is so drastic but, thinking about it, Evrard was trying to keep the secret of the Guardians. So he couldn’t reveal to much which explains the lack of definition in what he spoke. Knowing more about Evander’s character has made him a more likeable in my eyes and to some extent, I feel sympathetic for him.

I find myself comparing this with the previous book but it was such and amazing step up. There was not one scene where I was not gripped by Beth’s writing. It clearly showed the progression of both characters and storyline. The battle with Deimos and the surprise action by Evander’s ‘friend’ had me gasping in awe, and the meeting of ‘The Mother’ had piqued my interest and had me thinking of where this is going to go.

The love story that happened between Evander and Marcos was stunning! The fact that Marcos has been in love with Evander for thousands of years without the ‘Guardian of Secrets’ knowing about it and Evander didn’t think much about Marcos at the beginning. It is clear that Marcos had such a big heart which would go against his title – Guardian of War.

There is a few tail ends that could open this series up and I really do hope the author takes them. The obvious case is the story of each Guardian, but also with ‘The Mother,’ what’s her deal? What happened when she appointed Deimos the leader of the Guardians and where has she been all these years?

Recommendation:
I have given this a 5/5. This is because I was enveloped in the story and it’s characters. I honestly couldn’t put it down (but was made to from time to time - LIFE). I think the target market would be YA with I keen interest for a little magic and adventure.
