The Blood of Flowers
by Anita Amirrezvani
3.5, maybe a little higher given that it was a first novel. Amirrezvani is a gifted storyteller, but there are a few places were it stumbles a bit and feels inexperienced. I listened to this book, and I think that's probably the best way to enjoy it. The writing is heavy--rich and sensual (taste, smell, touch, sight) and evokes some vivid imagery of Iran in the 1700s and the beautiful rugs for which it is famous.
I really like the young woman who is the main character, though the horrible challenges she faces as a result of her gender and poverty made me angry at times. I thought the author did a good job of portraying the culture without condemning it with a modern American frame of reference (though I couldn't help but do that).
Also, I think there is too much sex in this book. Though it's not gratuitous and has important ties to the plot and character development, it's overdone.
