The feminine urge to live a cozy cottage life with your witchy girlfriend...
... and the fact that that's impossible, because the world around us is on fire, hate for everyone who is different is passed from generation to generation, and the aftermath of two wars and the damage caused by colonialism isn't really handled well.
Dawn Chen's rage filled fantasy novel about two witches from opposing sides of a war is becoming more relevant with each day.
It is a story I have long waited to read and is ticking many of my boxes...
Sapphic witches who become messy exes, a non traditional ending for an epic love story that worked really well for me.
Many time jumps at the beginning of the story, so you have to find out page by page what is really going on, and the pain and heartbreak that comes with it.
A lot of love for the Chinese language which sometimes echoes through the pages, although the book was written in English originally.
Fully nuanced character (main and side characters) who can't be labelled as good or bad only.
Highly recommend!
