Longlisted for the Stella Prize 2022. ‘Dropbear’ by Evelyn Araluen is a stunning debut poetry collection. It’s great to see the Stella Prize open to poetry now, leading to readers such as myself being able to appreciate great new voices in Aussie literature. ‘Dropbear’ demands reflection and discomfort from the reader, with themes of bushfires, politics, decolonisation and alienation that is at the front of our minds. I loved how Araluen is a local author that captures the anxieties of young Australians and voices her concerns effortlessly through poetry. I wouldn’t be surprised if ‘Dropbear’ makes the shortlist.
