The Christmas Orphans Club by Becca Freeman
3.0
My copy of this book was borrowed before me by an editor, I can only presume. They underlined and corrected multiple grammatical errors or word choice errors. For example, the use of phase when it should have been faze.
That was distracting.
The book in general was not my cup of tea. A blurb on the back mentioned "laugh out loud funny" and it did not deliver. I don't how to say this nicer it was funny in like a buzzfeed article from 8 years ago kind of way. It was not laughter inducing. Occasional half smiles maybe.
That being said, the book had a strong friendships which I like and some growth for the characters.
One more thought, Finn was in wayyyy more in the wrong for the fight that causes them not to talk for a year. It was 100% an overreaction and given a night to sleep on it would not have escalated. And true it needed to escalate for there to be any real conflict in the book. But I wished it was for a more just escalation.
The reason they don't talk for those who want to see if they should keep reading or not:
Hannah takes molly with Theo and they kiss while high on a dancefloor. It means nothing to either of them. Finn sees but also has a lame boyfriend at the time. So when Hannah tracks Finn down they say some "mean" stuff to each other like 'you have a boyfriendyou shouldn't be mad'. And that 'you are a coward'. And that's why they dont talk until.... Finn's homophobic dad dies on the next Christmas.
That was distracting.
