The Red Tree by Shaun Tan

I first read this book the summer after 8th grade when I was severely depressed and suicidal. It gave me hope for the future and I ended up taking a picture of the last page and hanging it on my wall to remind me that life has its ups and downs, and when things are down we just need to white-knuckle it until the good times come around again.

I recently re-read it, and am still blown away how well the author portrays some darker feelings, but in a way that wasn't depressing in and of itself; I found this book to be inspirational in a natural, intuitive way.

P.S. look for the maple leaf in every scene!
