Walter Moseley can write a picture that makes you feel the action/situation. This is a powerful picture of slavery in 1832 Georgia, of needing the encouragement of someone outside your environment and experience to achieve beyond our ability to imagine of the power of kindness, compassion and tough love.

The only this that "bothers" me is the all-too-common reliance of "fantasty" in YA books.
