The Helm of Midnight by Marina J. Lostetter
5.0
So. Wow.
This was better on my 2nd, and slower read.
The story follows De-Krona, a magical Regulator in the city of Lutador, in the valley of Arkensyre.
This is a world of monsters and magic, and both are strictly Regulated by those in power.
This was so well written. It flows like poetry and the world is so rich. The plot seems to move effortlessly from point to point while weaving in the world building necessary to help you grasp the setting.
It gracefully tackles themes of trauma, and family, and inequality. While there isn't always resolution in those it acknowledges them in ways that are tender and heartfelt.
It also heavily weighs into the carrying of guilt and how our guilt can shape our lives and help us to move mountains. Though not always in a good way.
