I will straight up admit that this review will be heavily biased.
His Majesty's Dragons series was one of those few perfect books that found me in the right place at the right time. Before books like Temeraire, I found reading tedious at best and something to be avoided at worse. I didn't know books like Temeraire existed and were waiting out there to be read.
So, yes. My rating is 5 stars and will forever be 5 stars, even if I can admit this book may have some minor flaws (or maybe major ones) to other readers.
As this is my review:
AMAZING! 10/10.
Temeraire truley manages to capture the wish fufillment element of fantasy in such a unique and unpredictable way. Our main character is NOT a young farm boy barely out of his childhood and our dragons come in a wide array of variety.
The series of His Majesty's Dragons is set during the napolionic wars, where England now has to protect her boarders and seas from the invading forces of the french. Thankfully, in this world, dragons exist. These creatures and their crew make up the aerial divisions inwhich our main characters must fight to defend their homeland.
Novik manages to bring to life a solid and believable alternative-universe England. Our main character of Laurence, a ship captain, comes into contact with Temeraire and his egg very early on in the story. Through this, we are swept up into the world of dragons, captains, crew, and the war for England's defence. The society these dragons and their captains live within are fascinating and throughly well thoughtout. One of my favourite things about His Majesty's Dragons is how much detail and thought that goes into this world. I could spend hours looking at the dragon-wiki describing various breeds of dragons, size, speciailies, and how they were bred. The world Novik created is one I haven't really come to see again since and I love it all the more because of that.
Novik creates so many characters to love and easily gets you invested into their plights. I will never not recommend Novik's His Majesty's Dragons and I will never get over the fact that her other series got way more love than this did, even though this one holds as special place in my heart.
For shame!!!
