Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole

5.0

Long ago, mortals who lived on the continent of Emarion worshipped the mighty Everflame, the Tree of Life and Death. A life began as a spark seed that fell from the sacred tree to the earth was lived and once the life was extinguished the soul of those who were found worthy by the Old Gods would remain in the branches to be warmed by the Undying Fire. Those that were unworthy were frozen in and icy hell for all eternity.

Like most things these beliefs were soon challenged by a group known as the Kindred, a group of nine immortal siblings that fled to Emarion from their own war-torn world. These being brought with them magic from their godhood, a divine force within them, as well as their loyal gryverns, creatures that have the head of a sea dragon, the wings and front talons of an eagle, and the body of a lion.

With time the Kindred won the hearts and worship of the mortals through their acts of healing and kindness. Soon each kindred took a mortal lover and bared children. These children were then knkwn as the Descended. The Descended were like their Kindred parents in many ways except they did not have their immortality and so to spare themselves the heartache of watching their loved ones grow old and perrish the Kindred cast a spell known as the Forging. This split Emarion into nine realms, each named for one of the Kindred and rulled by a Descended from each family know as The Crowns of Emarion. The realms: Lumnos, Fortos, Faunos, Arboros, Ignios, Umbros, Meros, Sophos and Montios.

It is within the realm of Lumnos that Spark of the Everflame takes place. On the celebration of Forging day we find Deim Bellator our in the slums of Mortal City healing those that need her aide but she comes across a strange sight, her mother meeting secretly with a Descended that she has never seen. Later when Diem returns home she finds that her mother is bow missing. Days turn to weeks and then to months without a word from her mother. Diem begins to believe there is no hope of her return and decides it is time to move on with her life.

With her mother gone Diem now feels free to learn more about the Descended, something her mother had forbade her from doing. As Diem uncovers more knowledge she begins to question everything her parents havs ever told her. The world as she knew it is turned on its axel and her values are uprooted when she believed them to be steadfast. Will Diem find her mother, will she discover things about herself she wish she had never sought the answers to, could the Descended be something more than she ever thought they were, and could the people closest to her be the ones she should really fear?

Spark of the Everflame is a fast paced, energetic, and well built ride. There are so many pivots and turns that keep you thinking about the true motives of each character. The ending is rather thought provoking and leaves you wanting to dive immediately into the second book. Penn Cole has done an amazing job of creating a world that is effortlessly easy to find yourself escaping to.
