Mass Effect: Foundation Volume 1 by Mac Walters, Dave Marshall
3.0

I want to give this a higher rating because Kaidan and Ashley are featured, and they don't get nearly enough love from this series that they deserve. But I think that's part of the problem I have: they still don't get as much love as they deserve in this. While we do get some nice background on Ashley, and see a little bit more of Brain Camp from Kaidan, it feels like taking a single bite from a slice of cake rather than getting to eat the whole thing.

Brooks's origin story is fine, I don't mind seeing more from her. It is cool that they made the effort to flesh out a character who only features in DLC. I just wish she wasn't so involved in everybody else's business. Like, why is she interviewing Ashley, anyway? Can't Cerberus get that information from literally anywhere? I feel like it would've been easy to get the Eden Prime reports. On top of that, what this comic says about the incident makes no sense. It claims Anderson left out the details that geth were involved and... why? Why would he do that? I was always under the impression it was shared at least throughout the Alliance fleet.

Also, Brooks brought up a good point: why were they investigating the crew of the Normandy when Shepard was the one they were going to focus on? I saw online there's this Winter Soldier AU involving the other Virmire squad member--the one you have to sacrifice. I'm wondering if that was the idea, but it wasn't really explored. It felt like it was just being used as a weak framing device when just giving us a comic featuring Kaidan and Ashley would've been fine. Other characters got their own featured comics without any weird framing devices!

Kaidan's was probably the closest one to just being about him, but it felt painfully short. Kaidan is my favorite character in the game. I always want to read and know more about him. What we got was fine, but a lot of it was just showing visually what we already knew from talking to him in the game. I would have loved even more stuff from Brain Camp. Really show us what living there was like! Instead, we barely get anything before it's over!

I guess I'm just salty that Brooks is the main character for some reason, and once again Kaidan and Ashley are barely given any attention.

On the whole it's fine as a comic. Though I'm not sure why the gun blasts look almost exactly like biotic abilities.
