Peaces by Helen Oyeyemi
3.0

Oyeymi’s latest novel starts out with the kind of word salad book critics like to deem literary genius, and I almost quit after the first few chapters, but she pulls it together and forms a captivating story. It’s a weird book, in true Oyeymi style, and a tale that interweaves the lives of all characters together until you have a big knot by the end, instead of a big knot that gets untangled by the end. I like that kind of madness. If you don’t, you might not enjoy her style. Whereas I loved Gingerbread, I wasn’t as enthralled with Peaces. Other reviewers have had the opposite experience. The fundamental theme of a desperate desire to be seen is an interesting and unique plot line, and one that I’m sure will be good fodder for book club discussions.
