The Magus
by John Fowles
At one point I thought maybe The Magus would be that mythical creature, a long book I wouldn't consider to be too long, but that didn't last.
It is undeniably well-written, often gripping, sometimes brilliant. Even when I was tired of it toward the end, I had a suspicion that the author wanted me to feel just that, the better to inhabit the character's state of mind.
Still, it is a bit bloated, a bit self-important, a bit too much.
