The Moment Of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World
by Melinda French Gates
My mom is the one who suggested I read this book. It highlights many of the struggles women face in this world. Some of them I knew and others I didn't, and in each case I learned something. I loved that about this book and I hope every person picks this up or listens to it on audio or is told about it somehow. These are important issues that deserve to be known and discussed.
Melinda touches on many of the things women struggle with in the world: contraceptives and the right to choose when or if to have children, access and ability to pursue education, equality in the workplace, abuse by men, and so on. She talked through what she learned about each of these issues and shared stories of those who had experienced them first-hand.
I certainly want to continue doing my part in lifting up women, encouraging young women to learn and grow and stand up for themselves. Hopefully people from all walks of life gain a better understanding for the struggles that women (especially the poor) face, and that they will be moved to do their part in making things better.
I don't really want to talk about this book in more detail because I believe it's important for people to discover the truth about these situations for themselves. I'm sure that Melinda didn't touch on every story or every situation that women face in this world, but she did talk about a lot of them and did it with candor and heart.
