Ui, I like this. A lot. It hit the same buttons like "The Martian" by Andy Weir did. Improbable but still realistic story with some quick thinking on the feet of the main characters and very likable main characters.
The premise itself is a very scary one because it could come true. There really is a supervolcano slumbering in the middle of the US. It could erupt. Maybe even in my lifetime. It would be a global disaster. A apocalyptic/dystopian novel taking these facts and making them come true? Very scary.
The plot itself is engrossing. I've been sucked into the the story from the beginning and the few times I had to, it had been really hard to put the book down. The reactions of the people have been realistic (sadly in some cases) and the consequences for nature/planet/mankind feel right too.
This is, once again, one of these stories in which I really, really, really would love to know what is happening to/in the rest of the world and how the people are affected in other countries - in the northern and southern hemisphere. Also, I could have done without the romance/lovestory (for me it just was too quick and I didn't feel the atraction between those two) and would have preferred if they just stayed friends (in this book).
I really like Alex, the male main character, and Darla, the female one, a lot. Both are quick thinker and especially Darla is awesome with her skills and MacGuyver-like thinking and acting. I had some issues with her behaviour regarding other people that are not her Mom (and later Alex) in the beginning but on the other hand, after what happened? Yeah, I get it. Sometimes both of them came across a bit Mary/Marty Stue-ish but it was okay.
Bonus points: the female firefighter and the gay neighbours in the beginning; talking about pregnancy; Darla saving Alex quite often; the incident/fight after Darla rescues Alex from the punishment hut re:prostitution
All in all a very enjoyable book and I'm looking forward to read the next part. :)
