Black Privilege: Opportunity Comes to Those Who Create It by Charlamagne Tha God

4.0

First of all, don't take the title for face value: the book is written by Charlamagne, who is known for being controversial. The book is neither about social issues, nor is it a book by a black man lying about the existence of racism in this country. As the subtitle indicates, the book is about creating opportunity rather than just dealing with the hand you've been dealt. I love that this isn't another person born into money trying to convince everyone that they can make it out of struggle. . I think this book would make a perfect graduation gift (high school and college) because there are some major life lessons being explained that are best learned when closing one chapter to open another.

Some of the big themes include understanding that all things work together and that there are no losses, just lessons. Another is the importance of reconnecting with one's core or roots. My favorite was the crucial lesson that one should never hurt themselves helping others. This is a self-help and autobiography in one and because of his style and sense of humor, it made for a great read. It is important for people to learn early in life not to be a victim of their circumstances, as Charlamagne is stressing in this book.
