Bone Crier's Moon by Kathryn Purdie

2.0

I've recently found myself leaning towards romantic comedy books, although this was a good break to get back into some fantasy. Bone Crier's Moon was a unique novel with so many impressive aspects, such as the concept of death magic and the incorporation of mythology throughout. I have been debating whether I feel the book is worth 3 stars or 2. While I think that the originality of this novel had so much potential, the lack of character personality and growth took away a significant aspect of this novel.

The novel surrounds Aileese, who was on a mission to kill a boy said to be her soul mate in order to join the other Bone Criers. I felt that the novel made Aileese's goal her personality and took away from being able to connect with her. The same goes for Bastien; his mission was to get revenge on the Bone Criers for killing his father. Besides his mission and being a thief, he had no character development. I'm still in shock from the ending as I was just beginning to get a glimpse of the characters, and while I know this is a duology, I felt like I didn't know the characters enough for it to be over.

I had high hopes for this novel and wanted it to be everything I heard of it being, but it just wasn't for me. I don't think I will be reading the second book in the series.
