Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank
5.0
The awkward moment you realize that if the Cold War had turned Hot and Nuclear, your state would've been wiped off the face of the earth.
This book is one of those "slice of life" kind of stories, though in a weird way. I can easily understand why this is a classic because the story just sucks you in and really got me thinking about a time when people saw nuclear war with the Soviet Union as a tangible threat. This really put into perspective what life might be like if a nuclear holocaust happened. You find yourself rooting for Randy and his little community, wanting them to make it and while there aren't any crazy events (No evil giant government plot here) there are the events of every day survival. Dealing with radiation, thieves, finding food and survival.
The only downside to this book is that since it was written in the late 50's, the beginning is filled with some technical details about how and why and when the Soviet Union might attack. Acronyms and things that weren't explained very well. I assume for someone who grew up during this time period (or someone who likes technical details) these parts would be interesting. Me personally, not so much.
The book holds up well even though it is from the Cold War era and I found myself believing that something like this could happen, even today. I definitely recommend everyone give this classic a read. It's definitely worth it.
