This is a story of reprehensible characters behaving reprehensible, valuing their amusement at others' expense over everything else and bitterly disappointed when their schemes succeed. It is one of the darkest and ugliest books I've ever read but I admire the perfection of its hideousness. Michel Houllebecq must be a fan.
Moderate: Adult/minor relationship, Gaslighting, and Misogyny
Albert Cossery has a reputation for holding women in contempt and deserves that reputation.
