Entangled by Cat Clarke

Wow. This book was incredible! At first, I wasn't sure if I'd like it. I thought it would be another whiny teenage book. But then a few chapters through, I was hooked. I finished it in less than a day, it was just impossible to get out of.

Cat Clarke's writing doesn't tell you what happens. It speaks to you, as Grace, as you journey through her painful and tough teenage years. The start seems dark, cold and sinister; Grace is about to kill herself. The reason for this is unknown to us at this point in the book, but it did throw us into the action. Then she meets a stranger, Ethan. As she gets drunk she realizes she is being put into a van, but when she wakes up, she is alone. In a pure white room, with nothing except a bed, bathroom, desk, chair, pens and paper. So she begins writing about everything. Her broken family, her deteriorating friendship with her best friend, Sal, her boyfriend and human anchor, Nat and where everything just fell apart.

The story makes you smile and cry. There are times you wish you could do something, anything, to help Grace, to save her from herself. She makes plenty of mistakes: she drinks far too much alcohol and often doesn't remember the previous night, sleeps with random boys/men, cuts herself and feels caged inside her tangled mind. Grace's voice is clear and powerful throughout the book, and all her emotions flow out from the pages with an ease that is a joy to witness.

Another great thing about the story is that many people can relate to it. There is nothing paranormal or sci-fi, only real, humane happenings. Lots of teenagers have a rough time, and Grace's story could inspire many. The ending is full of hope, and is enough to make you cry. The entire book is a rollercoaster, that ends with a realization that will hopefully save Grace, if only her mind.

I'd definitely recommend this to anyone, it is pretty damn awesome! :D There are a few slightly sinister scenes, I suppose if you're a very sensitive person they could be kinda disturbing, especially the suicide/cutting aspect of the book, which is what the entire story is centered around. But it is touching, and I guarantee you will feel for Grace. It is definitely a 5 star book... ;D
