Fourth Wing
by Rebecca Yarros
I didn't get the hype, and then I read it.
Solid 5 stars. I raced through this book. Devoured it. I haven't experienced this kind of joy and thrill while reading since I read ACOTAR at age 15. It's one thing to write a good book. It's another to sweep up your reader and inhale them into the world you created.
This book has everything a good fantasy YA/NA needs. A brave heroine (who still has weakness and a healthy amount of fear), the childhood sweetheart, a dark and broody love interest and a good amount of betrayal. The dragons are fun and interesting. A breath of fresh air, really. The pacing of this story is great. Quick and to the point, lingering only where it should.
Violet is a fun MC. Like I said, she’s scared shitless half the time. As she should be. I’d be scared too. She’s no strong, undefeatable character like we’re used to and she doesn’t turn into one. She adapts to her weaknesses. By training or by bending the rules to suit her. Even at the hight of her power, she still isn’t out-of-this-world-strong. She adapts. She’s the right amount of sassy, without it being overkill. I loved the bond she had with Tairn and Tairn loving his sassy little Silver One.
Xaden is great. Dark, snarky, broody and soft only for Violet. I was sold from his very first appearance (how could I not?).
Is this book perfect? No. Should it be? No. While Violet does have some (literal) plot armour, it never felt obvious. Of course your main character is going to survive thing that other wouldn’t. What would be the fun if they didn’t?
I cannot wait for the next book. This one ends the way these books should: in a good old cliffhanger that leaves you shocked.
So is this worth it? Hell yes it is. Do it. Read it.
