Overall:
Rep: biracial mc, found family, sisterly bonds, sibling bonds, father/daughter bonds

Thoughts
Neutral thoughts:
The overall story was really good! If you liked The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco, I think you might like this!

Pros:
I really liked the biracial rep in this one. I am biracial myself and I really connected with Brienna and how she saw herself being Maevana and Valenia in one way or another, at the same time and not at all as she was growing up and during the events of the book. How she struggled with her identity and where she thought she "belonged" as she made friends and became part of a family

The found family trope was so good!!

There were male/female relationships that were STRICTLY PLATONIC and I really liked seeing that

I liked the respect of and for woman in this one. In the land of Maevana, it is a Queendom that currently has a King sitting on the throne. (But you know, the whole plot is about putting the QUEEN back on the throne). But there's a huge emphasis that women are the ones that are in charge, that they are the ones to be feared on and off the battle field and that they are the ones that need protection at all costs. And while this could teeter into "shielding" and "oh lock the women inside so that they're protected" BS, this novel didn't do that! While yes there was concern for women, the women didn't let the men stop them from going into battle, training or doing other dangerous things that needed to be done. Women were at the forefront of every action and every battle & I loved seeing that.

Gripes:
-The PACING was wild. It started off REALLY well in the beginning, but around the %50 mark, EVERYTHING started to happen and I was just like "okay, so THAT just happened" It felt like I was watching a recap of a TV season and it went from one major event to the next and it left out some of the minute details that give a real explanation of all of the events. So while I did like the story, it went from "cruising" to "BAM BAM BAM"

The romance(s):
Brienna & Cartier: I smelled this relationship from a mile away & I was okay with that
