Captain America (2018-) #1 by Alex Ross, Leinil Francis Yu, Ta-Nehisi Coates

4.0

Captain America has gone through a lot in the last few years. And by that I mean both the character and the title. Thankfully the start of a new series doesn’t hide from that fact. We’re made very aware of the damages and cost of what has happened in the last few series. They don’t shy from it; they don’t deny it or try to downgrade it. It’s painfully front and center.
This sounds bad, but it’s actually fantastic. I love the idea of seeing Captain America step up to fix his reputation and mantle. It’s exactly what his character would do in this circumstance, and therefore wouldn’t have it any other way. It really is the best way to redeem his character, all things considered.
This issue starts out a bit slow, in that they’re laying out so much of what we already knew. The fight scene at the beginning is fairly intense though, for obvious reasons. I can’t wait to see what happens next – I like the groundwork that has been laid so far.
