Slade House by David Mitchell

5.0

It took me years to try a David Mitchell book, and it took me days to get past the slow start of this one once I did. But finally, having hit the flow and read the majority in one go, I have been absolutely skewered. Of course the writing is good, of course it is beautiful, the author’s acclaim could have come from nothing less. But the cleverness and unnervingness completely caught me off guard. I am afraid to step into dark allies, I am afraid to breathe dusty air in a Victorian house. It’s dark and cruel magical realism and I can only respond to if as if I believe it.
