Hummingbird Salamander
by Jeff VanderMeer
Great book, great read, brilliant story.
Yes the main character is unlikeable, yes she makes choices no sane person would make. Then again how often does one get a cryptic note from a barista? Who knos how ‘a sane person’ would react to these insane situations? As VanderMeer states, no-one knows how they will react in all thinkable situations, because they never find themselves in all these situations.
Is this story needs to be situated related to other works I’d say it has the style of TV series like ‘Mr. Robot’ and ‘Chloe’. Never completely know what is going on, but the hints we do get show that something enormous is at stake. Thematically this could be a precursor to Octavia Butlers Parable of the Sower.
