Calypso by David Sedaris

4.0

The parts of this collection that really shine are David’s essays about his sister and his mother, coming to terms with his grief and family tragedy. My favorites are “Now we are five,” “why aren’t you laughing” and “the spirit world.” Every time you finish an essay that leaves you feeling morose, it’s followed by one with the perfect about of humor, sometimes laugh out loud worthy, that keeps you coming back for more. David Sedaris continues to be the writer that leaves me sitting in my sofa, thinking about his words, and my own life and memories, for hours. At once haunting, wistful, beautiful, sardonic and witty.
