Waiting for the Flood
by Alexis Hall
Either I'm in a good mood or the books I'm picking up are all delivering what I hoped they would deliver.
This novella? novel? story was just what I was looking for. I originally thought Alexis had a bit of a formula (with the main characters being dicks and love interests being cinnamon rolls), but Edwin in this just a mushy little cherub. He's been out of a relationship for a while, but he's still mourning the loss of his decade-long relationship that seemed to crumble right out from under him.
Enter Adam, the Adonis-built engineer here to help with forthcoming flooding of Edwin's very floodable street/neighborhood.
I really enjoyed this. It's quick, but the story itself is, in my opinion, well-paced. The tail end is a smidge rushed, but for a short story, it worked. I enjoyed the setting. The slow expansion of Edwin's world from himself and his neighbor, Mrs. P, to including Adam and also his neighbors was well done. I thought the writing was leaps and bounds more captivating than Glitterland (which I enjoyed fine, but this was shockingly different). I liked seeing the characters interact even in this brief story. All around, very entertaining for a 90-page story.
I almost wish this were longer or that there was a sequel because seeing these two grow and live together would warm my icy heart.
