Jade City by Fonda Lee

"Expectations are a funny thing,” Wen said. “When you’re born with them, you resent them, fight against them. When you’ve never been given any, you feel the lack of them your whole life.”

i cannot believe i dnf-ed this when i first tried to read it in 2019 but i'm glad i gave this another chance, because holy shit, this is one heck of book.

you want an asian inspired urban fantasy? with a variety of characters and interesting dynamics? a magic system built on jade, that enhances one's abilities? a book with a perfect balance of politics, action, stressful rivalry of two clans and family drama? jade city has got you covered. though, if you're looking for a fast paced thrilling fantasy then this might not be for you. the build up is slow, doused in the growing tension and power plays. i think the true substance of this book pays off only when you get through it entirely. i'm in awe of how intricately fonda lee has crafted this book, that keeps you hooked to the characters and their story of seeking power and vengeance and trying to stay on top. the action is so good, almost as if the scene is played out in front of you.

honestly, just read it for the kaul siblings (lan, shae and hilo) and anden... and wen.
