I love Steinbeck because he loves humanity and unfailingly grants his characters the dignity inherent to all people. Can't read him any other way and am always surprised to encounter people who find his books depressing or misanthropic. Anyway, this may now be my favorite book of all time, but it's a close race with East of Eden.
