Cane by Jean Toomer

dark emotional

4.5

This was an incredible collection of poems, verse and short stories that are an ode to Black identity in the South and the place of Black and Biracial people in the early twentieth century with the changing times and the legacy of slavery and ongoing sexism and lynching.

Toomer was a multi racial man who believed strongly that his racial identities should be able to co-exist and not be pinned as either Black or White (he was also Indigenous), while also representing the legacy and impact of his Black ancestry.
