Tiger Hills by Sarita Mandanna

4.0

Tiger Hills by Sarita Mandanna is the story of a woman (Devi), from birth to old age, the two men in her life, and her sons. In many ways, it is a typical dynasty story. Man loves woman who loves different man. Woman marries first man, second man marries another woman. Second man dies, woman raises his son and loves him more than her own. It’s not a new story. Tiger Hills, however, is set in the mountains of Southern India in a district called Coorg, at the turn of the 20th century. Setting this love triangle in a world full of the traditions and mores that are so rampant and stringent as those of India gives the story a new twist. How each individual should, and then chooses to, act is much more narrowly defined. Our sympathies ride with each of the main characters because we know that there really is only so much each can do. Devi pushes these boundaries more than most of the characters, but still she is confined to her role. All of the main characters are well developed and sympathetic people. You cannot help but feel for them in their plights.
