Live No Lies: Resisting the World, the Flesh, and the Devil in the Modern Age by John Mark Comer

4.0

"We live in a real life fantasy novel." This was my resounding realization as I listened to this book. Evil and truth do exist. The origins of their realities are in an intangible and invisible realm coexisting with our own.

It feels odd to openly admit and explore the concept that a spiritual realm affects our tangible one. Yet, leaning into this realization might just be the way to experience the love and peace that so many of us crave.

I found John Mark's approach to writing on the classic Christian topics of the Devil, the flesh, and the world to be very refreshing. This was not a book of pointing fingers at other beliefs or traditions, but rather a guided journey for the individual who should choose to embark on it. A journey of learning to look at and understand the true source of evil –, the devil, and how to counteract that evil–; practicing the way of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Mark's theory of how these three entities affect our personhood and experience is a simple yet profound thesis: “Deceitful ideas play to disordered desires and are normalized in a sinful society.”

Whether you identify as one who believes and follows Jesus, or not, this book offers a unique lens to consider seeing the world through. It steps beyond the mainstream topics most have (sadly) experienced when exploring the Christian faith. The goal of this work; to return to love, not hate. Freedom, not bondage
