Maya's Blanket is a bilingual story about a young girl with a beloved blanket. As she gets older and the fabric wears, her grandmother helps her make the blanket into different items that can still be used and treasured.

I enjoyed the story, but I'm probably partial to Maya's Blanket because I still have a baby blanket that I'm still attached to, and although my blanket hasn't been sewn and repurposed into different items like Maya's, mine has been mended by my grandma, so I have those fond memories with my blanket, just like Maya.

All biases aside, I'm sure lots of people can relate to Maya's story. Even if they didn't have a favored blanket, they likely had something that was of special importance to them when they were young: a favorite toy, a loved stuffed animal, an over worn shirt.

I also appreciated Maya's Blanket showing Latino characters and including the text in both English and Spanish. It's a great book for people who are learning the opposite language. Even English speakers who aren't reading to learn Spanish will still be introduced to some Spanish terms and a little bit of Hispanic culture. The Spanish words used are easily discerned through the text and illustrations, but a glossary at the back is included, just in case.

From a critic's standpoint, Maya's Blanket does a lot and has a lot of great elements that can be appreciated. But looking past all that, Maya's Blanket is a heartwarming story that can be enjoyed by everyone.
