it's a bit jarring at first, when you learn that beckett is in love w ella bc we don't have all the details, so it's like ? okay. lots of telling he's in love, but no showing. but then, as you read more, you realize 'oh' & why it happened as the truth gets revealed. beckett is sweet. i genuinely did enjoy his character. ella, on the other hand, was a bit annoying. idk if it's bc she gives cringe millennial or what but yeah. it's kind of funny - we get told that beckett has issues, but we don't really see them. it's ella who's trust issues we see & is a major plot point. i loved beckett's relationships w her children & that's probably what i loved the most about the book - not so much the romance (which i didn't really gaf ab). which is why (MAJOR spoiler ahead) i was devastated that yarros killed off colt. i nearly teared up. i don't think his death was necessary & while, sure, it gave lines that tugged at the heart strings, i just couldn't help but feel like it was unnecessary. like. damn. lastly, i found out at the very end that yarros also wrote fourth wing & somehow that made her writing style make sm sense. like ohhh. yeah. what was i expecting? lol. anyway, it's not the worst i've read, but it's not the best. it's like having a mid drink.
