Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season Nine, Volume 5: The Core
by Andrew Chambliss, Joss Whedon
The Deeper Well is one of the cooler ideas to have come out of the final season of Angel, so I loved Buffy revisiting it here. (Except for the part where it gets trashed. Maybe I should rethink wanting Buffy to visit places.)
While I hate how Xander began this story arc, I'm pleased (sort of) with where it ended. There's always been an emphasis on Xander being the heart-part of the team, the too emotional and human-rooted part, and I've always enjoyed that. That also—apparently—means he makes some of the shittiest decisions and I kind of hate that part. I just find it difficult to believe after everything they've been through that Xander would choose to side with Simone over Buffy, even for a second. Question Buffy? Call her out? Rail at her for not thinking through her actions? Yes, yes, yes. Side with someone he called the enemy? Um, were you watching the same series I was? The number one thing Xander tended to yell at Buffy about was her dubious alliances with enemies. Just sayin'.
The fights in this book are EPIC, just as they should be. Overall it feels like this story raises the stakes, both in ways that impact the world and impact the characters. This has the heart that was missing at the climax of the previous season (deaths not withstanding), and it was awesome.
Also the coda with Billy and Devon was great. They're a wonderful addition to the team.
