Pretty Baby
by Mary Kubica
I wasn't sure about this book at first because I could tell off the bat that it was about a bleeding heart white-savior type woman and her husband who hates her and I didn't really like either of them. At first I hated the husband more, but over time I kind of got why there was so much distance and resentment between them. He's not RIGHT for it but honestly I'd be a little wary and pissed off too in his position.
I like how it lead you through Willow's story at the same time as the other characters. I kept thinking I knew what was going to happen, and I did to an EXTENT but not fully. The twists at the end were good payoff for me. I know a lot of people said it was slow but I kind of like that in thrillers. Lull us into a sense of security and "well maybe, idk it might be this" and then pull the rug out. Took me two days to listen to in audiobook form which I thought was the perfect length, and I liked the narrators for it also, which was a plus. I got genuinely excited at the end and ended up relaying a scene to my boss because it was such a crazy image. I love how unhinged some people get so quickly in this book.
I'm skewed though because I love books about problematic crazy people with baby trauma, idk it's a great genre. All in all not mad at all to have spent two days at work listening to this one.
