Kings Rising by C.S. Pacat
3.25

Definitely the most well written of the trilogy. There are flashes of brilliance that really show how great this series could have been. I mean the moments of goofiness in particular- in the previous book with the rooftop chase, this book with Charls, drinking with Makedon- show off what an engaging writer Pacat can be. I only wish the series had leaned into that tone way more, and settled for being what it is: a dramedy fantasy romance. Not a queer George R.R. Martin homage.

Reflecting on the series as a whole, the first and second books could have been condensed into one. I think it would have been much more powerful and effective to change Veretian society to still include the overt sexuality, but make all of the antics consensual. There was absolutely no reason for it to be the way it was, other than shock factor.

Anyway, there are a lot of things about this series I would change, because at the heart of it there is a story with many interesting and surprising moments. I just found it too riddled with confusing writing choices and contrived prose.
