Mina's Matchbox by Yōko Ogawa
5.0

4.5 - 5 ⭐️ I really loved reading this book. It was a wholesome coming-of-age story of one girl (Tomoko) going to live with her cousin (Mina) for one school year while her mother moves to Tokyo to train for a new job for the year. Mina even has a pygmy hippopotamus named Pochiko! She shares stories that she wrote inside her collection of empty matchboxes with Tomoko.
I really appreciated the slower pace of the book + innocence of the story. Nice way to start off my 2025 reading journey, a sort of palate cleanser from all the high drama/high intensity books!
