Things We Didn't Talk about When I Was a Girl by Jeannie Vanasco

emotional informative inspiring sad tense medium-paced

4.5

The writing of this book was an act of true bravery and I’m inspired by the ways in which Jeannie confronted her rapist head on. The book does a great job at illustrating how so many survivors take on responsibility for their assault and will often find themselves making excuses for their abusers. While I found myself frustrated with Jeannie at certain moments throughout the book, I couldn’t help but remind myself the many ways in which society has conditioned women to apologize for things that they should take no fault for. This is a powerful read to remind young women that no matter how small an act of sexual violence is/was, that it is not ok and that they are not alone in their experience.
