A subversion of the charming-nobleman trope or a closer inspection of it? You tell me.

Society created a self-sabotaging reward system. In this book, we see Pechorin from his perspective and that of others. It is no secret that his intentions are always mean and self-serving. Yet, he is favored by society, and his malice is dismissed as adventure.

This hero, and many like him are not entirely fictional, and are not always given the criticism necessary. This is a cautionary tale for the wise.

Unlike Tolstoy’s heroes of such nature (e.g. Oblonsky), Pechorin is not well meaning; he does not fool himself nor any observer. It compels the reader to search the journals for the root cause. And then you find it. Society.

We create our own monsters, then play the victim when those monsters come back to haunt us.

Pechorin was a “hero” of that time, but also of our time.
