2018 Update:
I reread this book as a part of Emmmabooks "Dregs Society" read along of the complete Shadowhunter Chronicles leading up to The Queen of Air and Darkness and my absolute love and adoration has not waned in this 3rd? 4th? time that I have read it, from when I first read it in 2013 to now in 2018, these characters and this world never ceases to bring me joy.

"They didn't know how lucky they were. They didn't know what it was like to eke out life in a dead world, where the sun hung limp in the sky like a burned cinder. Their lives burned as brightly as candle flames-and where as easy to snuff out.
I first attempted to read the Mortal Instruments series beck in my sophomore year of high school. I started skimming and when the "big reveal" happened, I stopped reading outright. Which lead to a brief "attempt" at [b:City of Ashes|1582996|City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments, #2)|Cassandra Clare|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1432730356s/1582996.jpg|1575860]. Which after that I just looked up what happened in [b:City of Glass|3777732|City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments, #3)|Cassandra Clare|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1369452339s/3777732.jpg|3443248].

But when I saw that City of Bones was getting a movie, and it took up my dashboard on Tumblr, I decided that I was going to read this series.
And I did.
And I loved it.
I love this series and this author with all my heart, which is hilarious because I went from hating it my 10th grade year to loving it my 11th grade year.

City of Bones was a wonderful introduction to the world of the Nephilim, full of supernatural creatures, unrequited love, sarcastic remarks, and bad fathers.
The story follows 15 year old Clary Fray as she's unwillingly plucked from her safe, boring, mundane life and thrust into the world of the Shadowhunters. She first sees them hanging out in a goth nightclub ( a frequent hangout for Downworlders) named Pandemonium. It's there that she watches as Isabelle,Jace and Alec maul a(n Eidolon) demon and they talk very loudly about their super secret identities(well they were glamoured so). From there Jace stalks her and something that happens that makes going to the Shadowhunter's bat lair a necessity, and the story progresses from there.
